my first experience with light painting probably dates back to the early 90′s: my initial exposure to photography at the baum school of art.  i dabbled a bit with it throughout the years and found particular amusement on the rooftop of my first nyc apt; capturing images from my alphabet city rooftop during macy’s july 4th spectacular.

when sprint’s flashlight animation commercial came onto the scene, i never associated it with the games i had played in my SLR <above photographs captured by long shutter speed + dragging wide to tight frame> then when i found the unofficial death cab for cutie little bribes video <PLEASE do yourself a favor and click to watch – i couldn’t embed it b/c wordpress apparently has issues with vimeo – but i think it is worth your 2 minutes 45 seconds, that’s my piece> i wrote off the practice as ‘trendy’.  turns out pablo was all over it 50+ years ago.

that picasso – such a trend setter. check out more of his beautiful light paintings here.   as it turns out, light painting refers to the technique where either object or camera move – drawing forms on film <or digital> with light. so get your glow sticks + have some fun.
